Nine years. NINE. Three times three. Nine. This month, M and I celebrate our ninth wedding anniversary (I totally typed ‘weeding’ right then – praise the gods for spell check). I had originally planned to write about the fabulous dinner that M took me to celebrate, but as I was starting to write this, I got a call from a friend who said I should talk about how we met.
It would be, to quote her ‘way more interesting than some silly dinner’.
So, I’m going to indulge myself here and tell you how an Aussie girl met and fell in love with a New Yorker.
In a galaxy, far, far away….
M will tell you that he found me in a little store in the back streets of Melbourne, sitting on a shelf (marked ‘50% off’ mind you) and that he was just taken by how cute I was.
I, on the other hand, will tell you that he hi-jacked me and my chilled out, relaxed lifestyle telling me about the high-flying fancy life we would be living in Manhattan if I ran away with him.
And in a way, they are both kind of true. We did meet in Melbourne, although not in any back streets and I have NEVER been a cheap date so no discount there. He did convince me to go and live in Manhattan with him (after being together for a year and just after 9-11 no less). And he totally, totally hi-jacked me – I was not interested in dating anyone when we met, let alone an American, yet he still managed to win me over with his wit, charm and ability to make me laugh out loud.
He’s one of the sweetest, kindness, most gracious people I know. M makes me want to be the very best version of me and yet, at the same time, he accepts me as I am, flaws and all. He’s been my rock, my guiding light and my shoulder to cry on. He’s driven me absolutely batty at times, and has encouraged all my little obsessions (from coffee to wine to Doctor Who, he enables them ALL). I knew I loved him and wanted to spend the rest of my life with him after our first date, but I have fallen in love with him all over again watching him be such a great Daddy to Little P.
So here’s to you my dear M – I love you more than wine (true story).
Happy Anniversary Sweetheart.
